On behalf of the Board of Thabyay Education Foundation, management team and staff, we would like to express our profound and heartfelt congratulations to Professor Tun Aung Chain on his appointment to the National Education Policy Commission. (See President’s Office Announcement for details)

We recognize and appreciate his extensive experience and leadership demonstrated in his previous positions including as Director of the SEAMEO Regional Centre of History and Tradition and as Member, later Secretary, of the Myanmar Historical Commission.

U Tun Aung Chain was born in 1933 in Myeik, southern Myanmar, while his father Dr Ba Than Chain was serving as a Civil Surgeon there. He was brought up in Pathein, his father’s native town and matriculated in 1949 from one of the Christian mission schools there, the Kothabyu Sgaw Karen High School.

Attracted to History in the University of Rangoon, he obtained an Honours degree in that subject in 1954, winning the Moay Twe Main Gold Medal for standing first in his class. He joined the service of the University as a tutor in the Department of History after his graduation. Except for a five-year spell at the University of Mandalay, he spent the whole of his academic career in the University of Rangoon, becoming a Professor in 1978 and retiring as such in 1993.

U Tun Aung Chain studied at Harvard University on a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship, receiving an MA in East Studies in 1957. Later in his career, he was a Visiting Fellow at several universities: the School of Oriental and African Studies of London University, Cornell University and Chulalongkorn University, and was SEASREP Visiting at the University of the Philippines, Diliman.

Currently, U Tun Aung Chain serves on the board of Thabyay Education Foundation. He is an outstanding citizen who has made a significant contribution to historical scholarship and also has strong social concerns.
