From a Kant Kaw Student to a YSEALI Fellow

“Because I was trained at KKEC first, I did not have many challenges with the classroom culture and subjects I had to learn during my study in United States as a Young Southeast Asian Leadership fellow.  I now have my own education project through which I aim to contribute back to my community.”

Taung Ra has an advice for the current and future students of KKEC:  “Value your time in KKEC.  Try to absorb as much knowledge as you can from your teacher, from Thabyay staff, and from other students.  Make good use of all the resources available there – from the Scholarship and Student Support Department, Curriculum Development Department and the Experiential Learning Program.”

Taung Ra was a quiet student when she first joined the Kant Kaw Education Center in early 2014.  Originally from Lashio, Shan State, she was eager to learn.  "At first, she struggled a bit," said one of the teachers at KKEC, but "we knew from the start that she will excel."   Right after completing her study in the University Preparation Program at KKEC, Taung Ra was selected to be part of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiatives, a program that "seeks to build the leadership capabilities of youth in the region, strengthen ties between the United States and Southeast Asia, and nurture an ASEAN community."

“Through the one-year of learning in an ethnically diverse but close-knit community at the Kant Kaw Education Center, I’ve gained the knowledge and skills necessary to propel myself forward.  It gave me opportunities for further education.   Also, my ability to network and skill to sustain it will help me a lot when I contribute back to the communities I came from.”

The Kant Kaw Education Center welcomes back Hnin Nu Nu Lwin, who recently completed one-year Global UGRAD program in the United States.

Soon after completing her matriculation at BEHS 4, Taunggyi, Shan State, Hnin Nu Nu Lwin came to Yangon to join the University Preparation Program (batch 11) at the Kant Kaw Education Center.  While at KKEC, she received a scholarship to join
the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD) sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA).  She was one of the eight students from Myanmar who got the opportunity to study for a year in the United States in 2014.

“For one year, I called the Missouri State University Springfield campus my home. It was a great experience and a big challenge taking classes in Public Administration, Public Speaking and Global Studies, but the World Learning staff, who helped us with everything throughout the program, were very nice,” said Hnin Nu Nu Lwin.

I would like to urge students in Myanmar to seek out study abroad opportunities

Asked if she has any message for fellow students in Myanmar, she said: “I would like to urge students in Myanmar to seek out study abroad opportunities.

You can’t compare experience you get from exchange program such as the Global UGRAD with anything else.  It’s about time we explore the world and learn at the same time.”
